Copper Beeches Ltd approached Rayner Davies to secure planning permission for a contemporary styled new wing to an existing Victorian Villa, which lies in mature gardens in the rural village setting of the Collingham Conservation Area. As well as create new en-suite bedroom and lounge facilities, the design has been conceived to better secure the garden spaces to the rear of the historic building. The home’s current internal circulation is complex and linear, with many ‘dead ends’ which has been seen to increase confusion amongst dementia patients.

The proposed courtyard development remedies this by providing a closed circuit for residents to roam safely. The courtyard garden in the centre provides safety and privacy for residents and the fully glazed link to the south will allow views through to the pasture beyond. Rayner Davies Architects secured planning permission in August 2018 without compromising the design principles as the application was recognised by Conservation Officers as a high-quality solution.
