Rayner Davies made it into the top 16 with our response to a demanding brief that required a flexible, expandable self build-able house for a starting price of £40k. Our ‘Low-Tech Bespoke’ house begins life as a 45sq.m, 1 Bedroom home costing less than £32,000 to build. It later expands to become a 156sq.m, 4 Bedroom dwelling suitable for multi-generational living.

Self build projects thrive on simple ideas and resourcefulness. For us, the ‘spirit’ of self building versus pure prefabrication, fundamentally lies in the end user’s maximum engagement in both design and construction. Architecture is a contextual practice and our homes are deeply personal; we think that self building honors these attributes most faithfully when it is the bespoke result of a successful collaboration between Architect, craftsman and end user.
