Rayner Davies were commissioned to investigate the feasibility for refurbishing and extending an existing complex of educational buildings into two separate residential care homes for the elderly and vulnerable. Some potential complexities to gaining planning permission for extending and reconfiguring the existing buildings were identified due to the site’s location in a Conservation Area and the presence of historic buildings. Therefore, in order to achieve 52 en-suite bedrooms and good quality communal living areas, the majority of the existing car park to the rear has been removed to make way for a green-roofed garden pavilion extension which contains the lounge accommodation overlooking new soft landscaped garden areas. The use of common ‘warm’ materials such as timber cladding to both the new and historic buildings is proposed in order to visually link the old with new.
