RDArchitects were asked by leading biomass fuels company Eco Fuels to design two boiler houses for installations on the Welbeck Estate in Nottinghamshire.

The use of biomass heating is an important renewable technology which plays an increasingly important role in the Government’s targets for CO2 reduction by 2020. Biomass heat is supported as a leading technology for renewable energy for heating.

The design is purposefully simple and low-impact. Covered with larch timber cladding, the façade will weather-in naturally and feel embedded within its surroundings tonally and texturally over time.

The building form has been split into two parts: the front section wherein the fuel is delivered and the rear section housing the boiler itself. This split roof arrangement minimises the visual bulk and volume of the facility, making it as sympathetic as possible when viewed from the ground.
