RDArchitects were appointed to design a substantial replacement dwelling on the site of an existing property which is located in a garden clearing within 13.5 acres of private woodland. The existing dwelling no longer meets the clients internal space requirements or thermal performance aspirations. The existing structure is also orientated poorly on the site resulting in low levels of internal day lighting. The replacement dwelling is therefore orientated to face due south to maximise available internal day-lighting. The layout has a central double height hallway to access living spaces either side in two separate wings which is emphasised in the elevations where each wing of accommodation is articulated by a single mono-pitched roof form, linked by the central flat roofed hallway space. The accommodation steps back at first floor to the rear (south) aspect, allowing south facing external roof terraces to the bedrooms above.
