Gipsy Hill Farm is the redevelopment of a Listed farmhouse, which has already received extension in the late 1980's. RDArchitects Nottingham have been commissioned to design a new extension that will provide enhanced living accommodation, whilst simultaneously restoring and enhancing the special character of the original Listed building.

The design follows the removal of a single-storey garage, with a replacement structure that remains subordinate to the main house. A large oversailing roof reinforces this principle, and encourages shading in high summer sun, and maximum solar gains in winter months. The form, materiality and stuctural principles of the design have evolved as a direct result of an intrinsic environmental strategy.

The plan at first floor is splayed at both ends to allow the full exposure of the original farmhouse without compromise. Much of the glazing and outward expression of the structure seeks to exploit the special character of the original farmhouse and its setting. The proposal further maximises the site by burying the building into the existing rear bank, making it appear less of an extension of the building and more from the landscape.
