The Precision Engineering Research Association UK headquarters are located on a large campus to the north of Melton Mowbray.
Built in the mid-1950s, by the turn of the century they could best be described as functional, but certainly not attractive. They were also becoming increasingly difficult to maintain and run. They were not felt to convey the right image for a high technology research establishment. Rayner Davies were invited to enter a design competition, competing with five other firms; the Board selected Rayner Davies as they felt that we had the flair, vision and technical capacity to undertake what was for them a major investment.
The brief was to refurbish the principal blocks on site, to improve the look, and increase thermal efficiency. A series of composite cladding systems were utilized which dramatically improved the heat retention and provided an exciting face to one of the areas major employers. The work was undertaken during occupation, requiring a good deal of liaison between architect, client and contractor. The project was delivered on time and within budget.
